In the Corner

The 'Nude in the Corner' project was an installation inspired by a process of exploration into the meanings of NudeInTheCornerlonliness and privacy. Completed in 2005 it was exhibited in Woburn Square Studio. The process was intensive, starting with an exploration of space via sculpted canvases. Everyday objects were explored in both second and third dimentions, in order to question what their purpose was. For example, we percieve a sink as a basic hygienic utensil but it also serves the purposes of beautification, water provision and space absorbsion. Only when we explore the shape devoid of its functioning can we truly comprehend our relationship towards this object.

The project began in the bathroom, sheets of A4 white printer paper were affixed to the walls, the shower unit, the WC and the door, forming a barrier over the opening of the door. A4 printer paper was chosen for it's stark, unsympathetic colour and it's mundaneness, the decision to use this to produce an art work elevates the mundane, even simple paper can become as valued as linen canvas or gold. The papers were photographed after their affixiation and then, using biro, the artist wrote feelings, song lyrics and expressions on each piece of paper. This completed the first stage of the installation, which was an entirely private process seen only by the artist herself. The solitude of the inititional stage forms a backdrop to the emotions of the final piece.

detail with door handleAfter the paper was written upon and photographed it was exposed to a shower, complete with shampoo, conditioner and soaps. The papers were then removed from the bathroom setting and hung up to dry. After drying the paper was ironed sheet by sheet to maintain the stains of the ink and soaps without the distracting scrumpling of the paper. Selected papers were then chosen, these were then printed upon with the photographs of the initial bathroom instalation.

After printing, other papers were chosen for electronic prints, orangebrowntexttyped phrases or written words. Using inks, printing inks, pencils and charcoal the backgrounds were created. Several papers were then used for monoprints followed by figurative or abstract iconagraphy. The figurative sketches of the bare human form combine with the written word, the abstract expression of emotion and blacked out papers to promote a feeling of all encompassing unity. The central theme is that of privacy and solitude, the return to the essentials of a person (as expressed through nudity) can be achieved on various levels. The figurative drawings and electronic prints combine to show the most obvious level of lonliness- the external. Upon some of the papers are items of clothing, partly worn, sometimes discarded, to represent that already in the expression of emotion through art we pinkprintoutloose the privacy afforded us through our clothing, to quote the old cliche:- we are baring our souls in baring our bodies.
